Sursee: Vehicle crashes into bakery after teenager mistakes pedals

A 15-year-old driver caused significant damage to a bakery in the old town of Sursee, Switzerland, after allegedly confusing the brake and gas pedals. The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, October 22, 2026, when the teenager attempted to reverse a parked vehicle to allow his father to enter the car.

The vehicle crashed through the storefront of Bäckerei Hänggi, causing extensive damage to the shop window and interior furnishings. Property owner Urs Künzli estimated that damages to the exterior wall alone could reach tens of thousands of Swiss francs. The bakery is expected to remain closed for approximately one month due to the long lead time required for glass replacement.

A man, identified as the driver's father, was injured during the accident and transported to a hospital by emergency services. No one inside the bakery was injured. Local police and fire departments responded to the scene, and traffic in the Oberstadt area was closed for approximately three hours to facilitate investigations and recovery efforts.
