Survey reveals awareness gaps in childhood myopia prevention

A survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of All About Vision (AAV) has identified significant gaps in parental knowledge regarding the prevention and treatment of myopia in children. The study, which surveyed 704 parents of children under 18, revealed that 48% of respondents believe there are no ways to reduce a child's risk of developing nearsightedness.

The findings indicate that many children are not following recommended vision health behaviors. Specifically, 62% of parents reported their children do not receive routine vision screenings during well-child visits, while 68% reported children do not hold devices at an appropriate distance or avoid screens before bedtime. Additionally, only 42% of parents were aware of specialty glasses designed for myopia control.

Awareness regarding symptoms also remains low. Only 22% of parents recognized blurry vision at a distance as a primary symptom, and 23% identified squinting as a key indicator. Experts suggest a need for increased education on lifestyle changes, such as outdoor time, and newer medical interventions like specialty contact lenses to manage the condition effectively.
