Survey reveals gap in aging preparation and independence
A survey conducted by A Place for Mom of more than 1,000 adults aged 40 to 80 highlights a significant disconnect between the desire for independence in later life and the actual steps taken to prepare for it.
Key findings indicate that only 11% of all respondents have made complete plans for when they might require consistent assistance with daily activities. Even among those aged 60 to 80, only 12% have established such plans. While nearly 60% of respondents view their current residence as a potential “forever home,” only 18% have discussed necessary home modifications to facilitate aging in place.
Financial and social expectations also show gaps. Approximately 40% of respondents expressed uncertainty regarding their ability to afford professional care long-term, while over half expect family or friends to provide most or all of their necessary support. The top priorities for aging successfully include financial comfort (32%), maintaining independence (31%), physical health (28%), and mental acuity (27%).
