Survey shows U.S. women frequently report being dismissed by doctors

A new survey released by Gallup and Pivotal reveals that one-third of women in the United States struggle to have their medical symptoms taken seriously by healthcare providers. The study, which surveyed 5,200 adults, found that 51% of women reported negative experiences with medical professionals in the past five years, compared to 39% of men.

Common issues reported by women include feeling dismissed, receiving misdiagnoses or no diagnosis, getting conflicting advice, and failing to receive clear instructions. One-third of women specifically reported that providers minimized or dismissed their pain or symptoms.

Researchers noted that these healthcare barriers often extend beyond the exam room, as unresolved health issues can impact women's work lives and family responsibilities. Pivotal, an organization founded by Melinda French Gates to advance social change for women, highlighted that these obstacles can prevent women from pursuing various life opportunities.
