Survivors of 2023 Pylos Boat Tragedy Face Asylum Struggles and Legal Battles in Germany

More than 600 people drowned off the Greek town of Pylos on 14 June 2023, while only 104 survived. Three Syrian survivors now living in Germany – Firas, Anwar and Karam – have spoken about their ongoing trauma and the obstacles they face seeking safety.

Firas received subsidiary protection, but his family remains separated because the German government suspended family reunification last year. Anwar is still awaiting a decision on his asylum claim, and Karam’s application was recently rejected, putting him at risk of deportation to Syria. All three are represented by PRO ASYL and receive legal assistance from the Greek sister organization Refugee Support Aegean (RSA).

In response to the disaster, survivors have filed criminal complaints against members of the Greek Coast Guard. Prosecutors have opened investigations against 21 coast‑guard personnel, including senior officers, for alleged serious crimes. The case continues to attract legal scrutiny across Greece and Germany.
