Part of situation: Maine Senate race: Collins and Jackson intensify campaign (11 clusters)

Susan Collins campaigns with Joe Manchin to emphasize independence

Susan Collins Joe Manchin Maine Senate race Troy Jackson Senate reelection

Republican Senator Susan Collins is campaigning alongside former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin to bolster her image as an independent lawmaker during her reelection bid in Maine. The two appeared together in Lewiston, where Manchin endorsed Collins, describing her as the “soul of the Senate” and a representative of Maine rather than a partisan figure.

Collins, seeking a sixth term, is facing a highly competitive race against Democrat Troy Jackson. To distance herself from Donald Trump, Collins has highlighted her history of breaking with the Republican platform, including her votes during Trump’s impeachment and her opposition to certain administration policies regarding Russia and defense appointments.

The campaign has also been marked by personal controversy. Collins publicly called for the removal of a radio advertisement from the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican-aligned super PAC, which attacked Jackson using personal details about his family. While Collins stated she had no involvement with the ad due to legal restrictions on coordination, Jackson’s campaign and his partner have criticized the attacks as undignified.
