Susan Collins defends against campaign donation allegations

U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) is facing renewed scrutiny regarding campaign donations and allegations of a “pay-to-play” scheme. Reports from The Intercept indicate that executives and a PAC associated with AM General, a manufacturer of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, donated at least $50,000 to committees supporting Collins after Congress approved $345 million for additional vehicle deliveries, despite previous statements from Army leadership regarding an excess of the equipment.

In response to investigative reporting by ProPublica, the Collins campaign held a media briefing to present evidence challenging the allegations. The campaign argued that Senator Collins was working to fund a University of Maine research partnership with Navatek over a year before the company’s CEO made any campaign contributions. Campaign officials presented documents and photographs intended to undermine claims that meetings were contingent upon donations, characterizing the investigative reports as taking communications out of context.

The controversy has become a central issue in the Maine Senate reelection race between Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson. While Jackson has characterized the allegations as “corruption of the highest order,” Collins has categorically denied trading government business for political contributions and has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
