Susan Sarandon celebrates 80th birthday and lifelong activism

Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon is celebrating her 80th birthday, marking a career defined by both cinematic success and outspoken political activism. Known for roles in ‘Thelma & Louise’ and ‘Dead Man Walking’, Sarandon has frequently used her platform to advocate for progressive causes, including social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and opposition to the death penalty.

Her activism has occasionally resulted in professional repercussions. In 2023, her talent agency, UTA, terminated her contract following her political stances. Sarandon recently noted at the Venice Film Festival that some agencies have discouraged casting her due to her views. Despite these challenges, she remains active in public demonstrations; most recently, she was arrested in New York during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s presence at the UN General Assembly.

Sarandon continues to work in the industry, recently presenting her film ‘The Echo Chamber’ at the Venice Film Festival. She has expressed that while the ‘power structure’ in Hollywood may penalize critics of certain governments, she feels supported by an international audience.
