Ragebait elected German Youth Word of the Year 2026
The term ‘Ragebait’ has been named the German Youth Word of the Year for 2026. Announced by the Pons Langenscheidt publishing house at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the term won with 36.5 percent of the vote.
‘Ragebait’ refers to social media content specifically designed to provoke anger, indignation, or controversy to drive engagement, likes, and reach through algorithms. The term, which translates literally to ‘anger bait,’ is increasingly used in everyday life beyond digital contexts.
The final vote included approximately one million young people aged 11 to 20. ‘Ragebait’ narrowly defeated two other finalists: ‘Peak,’ meaning the best of the best (33.8 percent), and ‘Crashout,’ describing someone losing complete emotional control (29.7 percent).
Susanne Daubner, a well-known Tagesschau presenter, played a prominent role in the announcement through humorous social media videos. Linguists note that the rise of such terms reflects the deep influence of social media dynamics on modern youth vocabulary.
