Kosovo authorities face scrutiny after Arlinda Zekaj murder

The murder of 49-year-old Arlinda Zekaj in Vitomirica, near Peja, has triggered widespread protests and political demands for accountability across Kosovo. Zekaj was killed with an axe by her brother-in-law, Albert Sylaj, on October 25, shortly after she had been escorted home by police following reports of domestic violence from her ex-husband, Jeton Sylaj.

Investigations have revealed that Zekaj had repeatedly sought protection and filed complaints regarding her safety. Transcripts show she expressed fear for her life and her son's well-being to police officials, including Faruk Muçolli, who reportedly told her he was not obligated to assist her. Despite a court-ordered six-month emergency protection order, the tragedy occurred just days after she contacted the chief prosecutor’s office to report safety concerns.

In response, the Kosovo Parliament passed a resolution to investigate institutional failures and establish a parliamentary commission. Prime Minister Albin Kurti has ordered the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice to submit reports within 72 hours to identify lapses in the chain of responsibility. Meanwhile, Albert Sylaj was arrested in Decan on October 27 after a two-day manhunt, and Jeton Sylaj has been ordered into one month of pretrial detention for violating court orders.
