Suspect in Jersey City sailboat theft killed in Rhode Island police shooting
A suspect accused of stealing a luxury 40-foot sailboat from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City was shot and killed by police in Newport, Rhode Island, on Wednesday morning.
The vessel, described as a 1968 Hinckley Bermuda, was reported stolen on August 22. Authorities noted that the suspect had previously disabled the boat's transponder near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, causing officials to lose track of the vessel.
Upon locating the boat in Newport near Storer Park, police attempted to approach the suspect. According to officials, the individual fled below deck, ignored commands, and armed himself with a firearm. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the suspect was killed and one officer was shot. The officer is reported to be in stable condition.
