Sustainability concerns hinder AI adoption for UK small businesses
Research from Novuna Business Finance indicates that sustainability concerns are a significant barrier to artificial intelligence adoption among small businesses in the United Kingdom. Only 31% of UK small business owners report using AI to support their enterprises, while 27% have no plans to use it and 21% do not consider the technology relevant to their operations.
Among those who have not embraced AI, 22% expressed concerns regarding the energy and natural resources required by the technology. These sustainability worries are most prevalent in the West Midlands (36%) and Scotland (31%). By sector, the media industry reported the highest level of concern at 43%, followed by education at 33%.
Despite these hurdles, the data suggests UK small businesses remain committed to environmental goals. Approximately 31% of respondents view sustainability as core to their business culture, with 38% taking practical steps this year, such as improving waste and recycling policies and investing in energy-efficient equipment.
