Sustainability initiatives and consumer protections rise in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is seeing increased activity regarding the energy transition, both through community engagement and consumer protection initiatives. The sixth edition of the National Climate Week aims to showcase local sustainability efforts. Unlike previous years that focused on designated ‘Climate Mayors,’ the event has expanded to allow anyone to participate through actions such as clothing swaps, tool sharing, or implementing new sustainable home practices.

Simultaneously, as more homeowners invest in technologies like heat pumps, solar panels, and home batteries to combat rising gas prices, concerns regarding consumer fraud have emerged. The Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH) has established a reporting point for individuals who feel pressured, misled, or poorly informed during the purchase of sustainable home products. This initiative seeks to identify patterns of misinformation to better protect consumers as the country works toward its 2050 energy-neutrality goal.
