Sustainability initiatives focus on urban greening and biobased materials

In Utrecht, entrepreneurs and organizations like Utrecht Natuurlijk are addressing the practical challenges of urban greening. During a recent session organized by Ondernemersfonds Utrecht and Utrecht Natuurlijk, participants discussed transitioning from green concepts to actionable projects. Key issues include managing greenery in shopping streets and industrial areas, balancing aesthetic and climate improvements with the needs for logistics, terraces, and maintenance.

In the materials sector, the startup FoamBloxx is working to disrupt the conventional foam market by producing circular and biobased plastic foam. A spin-off of the family business Uxem, FoamBloxx produces ECOfoam, which contains at least 50 percent biobased or recycled raw materials. While the company aims for 100 percent sustainability, current technical and cost constraints necessitate the use of some fossil-based chemicals to ensure product functionality.
