Sustainability initiatives in the Netherlands focus on community action
Local sustainability initiatives in the Netherlands are focusing on community connection and practical action. In Drachten, the business park De Haven is hosting a ‘Bloeiweek’ from October 26 to 30. This event is part of the Fryslân Bloeit movement, which aims to build sustainable and future-proof communities through local cooperation. The week addresses various challenges, including climate change, biodiversity, and social issues like loneliness, by encouraging entrepreneurs and residents to work together.
Similarly, the Green Office VU organized the annual Green Fair to introduce students to creative, low-threshold ways of living sustainably. The fair featured activities such as clothing repair workshops and a ‘Green Clinic’ led by theater group De Gouden Haas. This clinic provided a space for participants to discuss climate-related emotions with a psychologist and receive practical tips on plant-based eating and local consumption, emphasizing that community is a backbone for environmental action.
