Sustainability integration in the tourism sector
Industry experts are emphasizing the necessity of integrating environmental and social sustainability into the core management of tourism businesses to drive operational efficiency and long-term profitability.
At the V Hosteltur Tourism Sustainability Meeting in Madrid, specialists identified key priorities for the sector, including increasing value per trip, distributing demand more evenly throughout the year, and improving asset resilience. Leaders noted that sustainability should encompass governance, risk management, and legal compliance, rather than being a separate initiative.
In Brazil, discussions at the 1st Brazilian Forum for Responsible Tourism and through the publication of the book 'UMATALHI' highlighted the role of sustainability certifications. These instruments help businesses set goals, monitor impacts, and demonstrate socio-environmental commitments. While certifications can increase commercial reliability and encourage internal policy reviews, their effectiveness depends on how deeply these criteria are incorporated into daily management routines and local supply chains.
