Sustainability through renovation and resource sharing
Experts are highlighting ways to promote sustainability through home renovation and shared resource models.
Architect Barbara Buser advises that successful home renovations require inspecting the building's core structure first. Key steps include checking for moisture, cracks, and insect damage in basements and attics. Buser suggests that many components, such as solid wood floors, doors, windows, and kitchen elements, can be salvaged and reused if they can be dismantled without destruction. While electrical installations often require replacement due to new regulations, heating radiators can frequently be kept, though the heat source itself should be upgraded to more ecological alternatives.
In Bochum, the “bib der dinge” initiative promotes a circular economy by allowing members to borrow items instead of purchasing them. Co-founded by researcher Najine Ameli, the library offers over 3,500 items, including tools, kitchen appliances, and musical instruments, for an annual membership fee. This model aims to reduce consumer waste and electronic scrap, aligning with legislative efforts to encourage manufacturers to support repairs beyond warranty periods.
