Sustainability trends emphasize regenerative profit and leadership

Recent discussions in the business sector emphasize a shift toward regenerative profit and improved sustainability execution. Rather than viewing profit solely as an end goal, new models suggest using financial returns as instruments to support ecological regeneration and social resilience. Companies like Fairphone and Mud Jeans are cited as examples of this shift, prioritizing repairability, transparency, and circularity over traditional fast-consumer sales.

However, the BDO Sustainability Survey 2026 indicates that while many organizations possess the necessary knowledge and structures, leadership and impact measurement remain significant obstacles. The survey, conducted among professionals in over 40 countries, shows that while governance and ethical business practices are ranked as top priorities—with 96% of respondents viewing them as highly important—the integration of sustainability into core business strategies often lags behind.

There is a noted risk that geopolitical tensions may cause companies to prioritize compliance and governance over climate-related goals. Experts suggest that moving from a 'learning' phase to a 'mature' phase requires clear accountability from leadership and a shift in value measurement from short-term cash flow to long-term metrics such as biodiversity and social well-being.
