Sustainable Aviation Fuel becomes strategic amid rising fossil fuel costs
The aviation industry is facing increasing economic risks due to its heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Rising oil prices and geopolitical instability, particularly in the Middle East, are driving up jet fuel costs, which have doubled compared to last year. This volatility is prompting airlines to reduce less profitable flights, potentially leading to fewer travel options and higher ticket prices for passengers.
In response, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is transitioning from a purely environmental measure to a strategic economic necessity. While IATA predicts global SAF production will reach 2.4 million tonnes this year—representing only 0.8% of commercial aviation fuel consumption—the industry is seeing a surge in new projects, pilot programs, and financing agreements scheduled for 2026.
Key developments include Arcadia eFuels signing a supply contract in Denmark, Verso Energy securing a buyer in France, and Infinium securing commitments for Project Atlas in Texas, with American Airlines as a physical recipient. Despite these advancements, large-scale synthetic fuel production in Europe has yet to reach final investment decisions, and current production volumes remain well below the levels required to meet global climate targets.
