Sustainable Aviation Fuels and Electric Aircraft Shape Next-Gen Air Travel
The aviation sector, accounting for roughly 2‑3% of global CO₂ emissions, faces a dual challenge of meeting rising demand while reducing its climate impact. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), derived from waste oils, biomass, or synthesized using green hydrogen and carbon capture, can slash lifecycle emissions without major aircraft redesigns, but production remains limited and costly. Parallel advances in electric propulsion are positioning battery‑powered regional aircraft for short‑haul routes, offering lower noise, operating costs, and direct emissions. Hydrogen is also emerging as a promising energy carrier for both fuel and onboard electricity generation. Accelerated industrial investment and scaling are required to align fuel supply with projected demand and to bring these technologies into broader commercial use.
