Sustainable construction innovations emerge in Brazil and India
Researchers and companies are developing new construction materials designed to reduce carbon emissions and utilize waste. In Brazil, the Unidade Embrapii Senai Cimatec, in partnership with Mazodan Laboratório & Produtos Cimentícios, has developed a sustainable mortar using mineral residues and sediments from the Amazon River. This technology can potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% and lower mortar production costs by 50% while increasing durability.
In India, researchers at Mepco Schlenk Engineering College have developed a concrete capable of absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. By incorporating zeolite and bamboo biochar, the team created a mixture known as ZB5. This material demonstrated a 7.48% increase in compressive strength compared to conventional concrete, offering a more sustainable alternative for infrastructure projects.
