Sustainable drainage systems utilized for water management in the UK

Developments in the United Kingdom are increasingly utilizing Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to manage surface water runoff and mitigate flooding risks.

Klargester provides a range of engineered solutions under its AquaCore portfolio, including AquaTreat and AquaOil separators designed to remove pollutants like hydrocarbons and suspended solids. For managing water quantity, the company offers AquaHold attenuation solutions for residential areas, car parks, and motorways, alongside pumping stations and rainwater harvesting systems.

In the London Borough of Merton, Sudsplanter Ltd has implemented a multi-site project across seven schools to address recurring surface water flooding. Supported by the Department for Education and the SuDS in Schools programme, the project utilizes modular rain gardens known as SuDSPlanters. These units divert roof runoff into planted features, using a layered system of soil and reservoirs to attenuate, filter, and store water. This process mimics natural drainage to reduce peak flows into the sewer network and prevent localized flooding in classrooms and playgrounds.
