Sustainable household tips for cleaning and composting

Various household methods can be used to repurpose waste and improve domestic sustainability. Old socks that have lost their pair or are no longer wearable can be used as cleaning tools. They can serve as dusters for baseboards, blinds, and lamps, or be used to clean plant leaves. Additionally, they can be used to wipe mirrors, windows, and countertops, or even as covers for mops to assist in floor cleaning.

Food scraps, such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells, can be transformed into organic compost. This biological process, supported by institutions like Embrapa, uses microorganisms to turn organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Composting helps improve soil moisture retention and nutrient availability for gardens and indoor plants. However, materials like meat, bones, oils, and fats should be avoided in home composting systems to prevent odors and pests.
