Sustainable mobility initiatives expand in Chile and Colombia

Urban mobility initiatives are expanding in South America through new infrastructure and service expansions.

In Chillán, Chile, the University of Concepción (UdeC) has inaugurated a new bicycle parking facility at its Chillán Campus. The 40-square-meter space can accommodate 50 bicycles and features weather protection, security cameras connected to a central station, and controlled access via the eTUdeC virtual credential. The project was implemented in response to student requests to promote sustainable transport and reduce carbon footprints.

In Bogotá, Colombia, efforts to improve cycling infrastructure are underway. The city's shared bicycle system, operated by Tembici, is expanding its coverage area toward the north. A contract modification has added 7.8 square kilometers to the service area, bringing the total operational surface to 34.8 square kilometers. Additionally, the Institute of Urban Development (IDU) has enabled a new exclusive bridge for pedestrians and cyclists at the intersection of Avenue 68 and Calle 63 to complement the public transport network.
