Sustainable Schools Award recognizes Brazilian student innovations
The 4th edition of the Sustainable Schools Award (Prêmio Escolas Sustentáveis) has recognized innovative environmental projects developed by students and teachers across Brazil. The ceremony, held in Salvador, highlighted initiatives that transform waste into practical solutions for local challenges.
In the category for early childhood and primary education, the Casa da Infância school in Salvador won for its project “Infância, Sustentabilidade e Cidades Educadoras.” This initiative facilitates an educational exchange between Brazilian and Colombian schools, involving activities such as composting, school gardens, and biodiversity mapping. The project has reportedly impacted approximately 2,000 people.
In the category for middle school, high school, and adult education (EJA), the EcoLuz Trap project from the Federal Institute of Pará (IFPA) was honored. Developed by students in Marabá, this low-cost technology uses repurposed materials and electronic components to create light traps that combat disease-carrying mosquitoes. The project has reached an estimated 3,500 people.
The award is an initiative by the Santillana Foundation in partnership with the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OIE). Winners receive financial resources and the opportunity to represent Brazil at an international stage in Mexico City.
