SustainMed 2.0 project targets sustainability in German hospitals
The SustainMed 2.0 project, supported by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy of Baden-Württemberg, is working to transfer sustainable solutions into clinical practice. The initiative aims to identify best practices using digital tools to help hospitals across Germany reduce emissions and conserve resources.
In an interview regarding the climate protection perspective, Mareike Freund, the climate protection manager at University Hospital Tübingen (UKT), discussed greenhouse gas accounting and the circular economy. The project highlights the significant environmental impact of the healthcare sector, noting that an average German clinic produces approximately eight tons of waste daily and accounts for about five percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
