Tierra del Fuego teachers end 46-day strike after government agreement
Teachers in Tierra del Fuego, represented by the SUTEF union, have agreed to end a 46-day strike following a comprehensive proposal from the provincial government. The decision was reached during a provincial congress of delegates, where 69% of the 220 representatives voted to accept the terms, while 29% voted to continue the protest.
Governor Gustavo Melella and Education Minister Pablo López Silva spearheaded the negotiations. The agreement includes a formal decree declaring a 12-month salary emergency for the teaching sector, which allows for administrative restructuring and exceptional measures to address purchasing power. Additionally, the government committed to presenting a new Educational Financing Law, implementing a school infrastructure maintenance plan, and establishing a Teacher Health Table to address worker well-being.
While the teacher strike has concluded, other labor tensions remain. The UPCN union has rejected participation in state salary negotiations, arguing that the government has already unilaterally determined the increase percentages, leaving no room for genuine discussion.
