SUV Evolution: From Battlefield Transport to Global Market Leader
The Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) has evolved from 20th-century battlefield transport into a dominant force in the global automotive market, accounting for over half of new vehicle sales.
The origins of the SUV can be traced to military vehicles like the 1940 Willys Quad and the legendary Willys MB (Jeep), which utilized four-wheel drive and rugged frames to navigate difficult terrain. Following World War II, these designs transitioned to civilian use through series like the Civilian Jeep (CJ) for farming and construction.
The segment shifted toward leisure and luxury through key historical models. The 1963 Jeep Wagoneer introduced passenger-car interiors and automatic transmissions, while the 1970 Land Rover Range Rover redefined the category by combining off-road capability with high-end luxury, earning the nickname ‘Rolls-Royce of the desert’.
