Suvarnabhumi Airport expands connectivity and biometric entry systems
Thai Airways is implementing a strategic expansion at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport through its new ‘Silk Hub’ initiative. The airline aims to transform the airport into a major connecting hub by linking regional feeder markets in Southeast Asia with long-haul networks. For the 2026/2027 winter schedule, the airline plans to operate 66 routes and nearly 1,000 weekly flights, targeting high-volume markets in India and China.
In tandem with airline growth, Thailand has expanded its automated border control capabilities. As of September 2026, travelers from 33 nationalities—including citizens from France, Germany, the UK, and Australia—can utilize automatic eGates at Suvarnabhumi and other major airports like Phuket and Chiang Mai. The system uses biometric facial scanning and electronic passports to process arrivals in under 60 seconds.
To use the eGates, travelers must possess a compatible electronic passport. Priority is given to frequent visitors whose biometric data is already registered in the system; first-time visitors may still be required to see an immigration officer to complete their initial biometric enrollment.
