Suvarnabhumi Airport expansion aims for 120 million annual passengers

Thailand is implementing a major expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport to increase its annual capacity to 120 million passengers. The multi-billion-dollar project includes the construction of a new South Terminal, an eastern terminal expansion, and a fourth runway designed to support 120 flights per hour by 2040. The development also features an integrated ‘Airport City’ with hotels, cargo hubs, and aircraft maintenance services.

To address immediate congestion, the government is streamlining passenger processing. This includes expanding the automated passport control system to include 31 additional nationalities by August 2026. Authorities are also implementing dynamic reconfiguration of immigration halls and adjusting staffing levels to manage peak flows of up to 6,000 passengers per hour. Officials noted that improving arrival efficiency is critical to supporting the national economy, including the aviation, retail, and tourism sectors.
