Suvarnabhumi Airport to expand automated immigration gates to 31 additional countries

Thailand is expanding the use of automated immigration gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport to alleviate long queues during peak travel seasons. Currently, the automated system is only available to Thai citizens and travelers from Singapore and Hong Kong. The Thai Immigration Bureau has agreed in principle to extend this service to citizens from 31 additional countries, bringing the total to 33 nationalities.

Once fully operational, the system is expected to handle approximately 53% of international arrivals. During peak periods, the airport sees up to 190,000 total passengers daily, with immigration checkpoints facing significant pressure between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. The expansion will be implemented in phases, involving equipment preparation and the integration of biometric databases. Travelers already in the immigration database can use the gates directly, while first-time visitors must first complete biometric registration at a manual counter.

Government officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, as well as the Minister of Tourism and Sports, recently inspected the airport to discuss congestion management. In addition to the automated gates, authorities plan to reconfigure arrival areas and adjust staffing levels based on flight schedules to better manage passenger flow.
