Suvendu Adhikari visits Kalighat Temple for Kaushiki Amavasya
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata on September 10, 2026, to observe Kaushiki Amavasya. During the visit, Adhikari offered prayers to Goddess Kali and partook in the traditional bhog, which included fish and pulao.
His participation comes amid a regional debate regarding dietary practices. Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, head of Bageshwar Dham, recently advised Bengali Hindus to avoid non-vegetarian food during Durga Puja. Adhikari responded by stating that while he follows sattvik dietary rules during specific religious periods, he also consumes non-vegetarian offerings, such as goat meat, as part of the temple's traditional customs.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defended the Chief Minister, with spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari asserting that Adhikari's actions respect the established faith and traditions of West Bengal.
