Suwa Lake fireworks competition introduces accessible parking and viewing

The executive committee for the ‘National New Fireworks Challenge Cup 2026’ has announced a new initiative to improve accessibility for the upcoming competition at Suwa Lake. Starting September 5 and running through October 31, the event will offer ‘priority consideration parking’ specifically designed for the elderly, people with disabilities, and families with children.

This initiative, proposed by Ast Consulting CEO Takeshi Matsuzawa to the Suwa Tourism Association, provides 40 parking spaces at the Kohan Park lot near the D51, paired with dedicated viewing areas on the lakeshore. The goal is to accommodate those who previously found it difficult to attend due to mobility issues or large crowds. Reservations for these sets open on August 24 at noon via the official Suwa Lake Fireworks website. Each set costs 2,000 yen.

The competition features fireworks displays held on various Saturdays, with preliminary rounds occurring in September and October, culminating in a final on October 31. Each participating pyrotechnician competes in a 90-second window using specific shell sizes to showcase their artistry.
