Suwałki advances ‘Zielone Suwałki’ urban greenery project
The Suwałki municipal government is advancing the ‘Zielone Suwałki’ (Green Suwałki) project, which aims to create 9 hectares of new green space across 12 locations in the city. Two recent stages of the project have reached completion.
At the III High School in Suwałki, concrete and asphalt surfaces, curbs, and walls were removed to make way for trees, shrubs, and small architecture, including amphitheater-style seating designed for student gatherings and school ceremonies. Future additions to this site will include a large swing, loungers, and planters.
A second completed stage involved the intersection of Kolejowa and Utrata streets. This area underwent lawn renovation and the planting of native deciduous trees, shrubs, and perennials. The use of native species is intended to improve drought resistance and support local fauna, such as insects and birds.
Other planned developments under this initiative include landscaping near Świerkowa and Nowomiejska streets, planting 100 large trees, and removing concrete surfaces near the PKS bus station, Maria Konopnicka Square, and Muzyczna Street. These investments are supported by European funds through the ‘European Funds for Podlaskie 2021-2027’ program.
