Suwalki Gap identified as critical NATO strategic bottleneck

The Suwalki Gap, a narrow strip of land connecting the Baltic states to the rest of NATO, is being highlighted as a critical strategic bottleneck. The region, located approximately 600–650 km from southern Finland, is considered highly volatile due to its position between the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus.

If Russia and Belarus were to gain control of the corridor, the land connection between the Baltic nations and NATO would be severed, significantly complicating the movement of military reinforcements and equipment. U.S. General Ben Hodges has described the area as ‘one of the hottest places on the world map,’ and Politico has labeled it the world’s most dangerous place.

Local residents in Lithuanian towns like Kybartai and villages such as Salaperaugis express growing anxiety regarding the proximity of the Russian border. While the landscape remains a peaceful rural area of fields and forests, the geopolitical tension has led to increased focus on regional defense and the potential for conflict.
