Suwayda clashes: 10 security forces injured in southern Syria
Clashes have erupted in the Suwayda province of southern Syria between the de facto government's security forces and local armed groups, primarily from the Druze community. Syrian state media reported that at least 10 members of the Internal Security Forces were injured on Monday during confrontations in the rural areas west of Suwayda, specifically around the Tal Hadid and Walga axes.
The violence follows the deaths of two civilians in clashes near the city the previous day. Local Druze factions, including the National Guard led by Hikmat al-Hajri, have resisted the central government's attempts to assert control over the region, which has maintained a level of autonomy since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
The National Guard has accused government forces of using heavy machine guns and mortars indiscriminately against civilians, claiming at least one child was injured. Meanwhile, reports suggest the resurgence of tension may be linked to the return of militia leader Yamen al-Saghir to previous contact points. The situation highlights the ongoing instability in a country still struggling to unify following years of civil war.
