Suwon City uncovers and secures honors for two local independence activists

Suwon City has announced that two local independence activists, Moon Yong-bae and Yoon Kyung-ui, have been officially recognized by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. Their inclusion in the list of 283 independence merit recipients was announced in celebration of the 81st Liberation Day.

Moon Yong-bae, originally from Yangsan-ri, Seongho-myeon, was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation. While working as a laborer at the Yongsan Workshop, he was arrested in connection with the Joseon Communist Party Reconstruction Movement and imprisoned in Seodaemun Prison for approximately two years starting in 1937.

Yoon Kyung-ui, from Maehwa-ri, Seosin-myeon, received a presidential citation. An agricultural worker, Yoon was sentenced to six months of imprisonment in 1937 for allegedly spreading rumors regarding the Japanese military during the wartime period.

Because the specific whereabouts and descendants of these individuals were difficult to trace, Suwon City applied for the awards on behalf of their families. This initiative is part of a long-term effort by the Suwon Museum, which has been researching and identifying local independence activists since 2008. To date, the city's efforts have led to the national recognition of 15 independence activists.
