Suwon Mayor leads local government climate action resolution
Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun, acting as chair of the Local Government Association for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition, led a joint resolution for climate action during an event in Seoul. The initiative involves 12 local governments aiming to support South Korea’s 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) for greenhouse gas reduction.
Mayor Lee emphasized the need to reorganize administrative systems into ‘climate governance’ to meet decarbonization goals. He called for stronger cooperation between central and local governments to expand renewable energy, implement zero-emission transportation, and reduce waste.
Suwon City outlined specific targets to achieve these goals, including the establishment of 50 ‘Suwon-style sunlight power plants,’ transitioning 100% of city buses to zero-emission vehicles, creating 1,000 urban pocket gardens, and increasing the environmental education completion rate among citizens to over 30%.
