Svalbard marks centenary of first Catholic Mass in Longyearbyen

Bishop Erik Varden, Bishop of Trondheim and Apostolic Administrator of Tromsø, presided over a solemn Mass in Longyearbyen to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Catholic Eucharist in the Svalbard archipelago.

The ceremony, held on August 30, brought together the local Catholic community and representatives from the Lutheran Church of Norway, lending the event a strong ecumenical character. Participating clergy included Father Andrzej Kościukiewicz and Father Rafał Ochojski, alongside members of Caritas and the Catholic community from Tromsø.

In his homily, Bishop Varden reflected on human fragility and isolation, drawing parallels between the harsh Arctic landscape and the spiritual needs of those experiencing loneliness or fear. He noted the historical shift in accessibility to the region, contrasting the arduous sea voyages of a century ago with modern air travel.
