Svalbard ship seizure triggers diplomatic tension between Norway and Russia

A Norwegian court order seizing the Russian vessel Professor Molchanov in the port of Barentsburg on the Svalbard archipelago has triggered significant diplomatic tension between Norway and Russia.

Russian officials have reacted with hostility to the decision. The state news agency TASS characterized the seizure as an attempt by the West to open a new front in the Arctic. Andrey Chibis, governor of the Murmansk region, warned that Norway is “waking the Russian bear” and asserted that Russia possesses the means to defend itself via its Northern Fleet.

Further complicating the dispute, members of the Russian State Duma have challenged Norwegian sovereignty over the archipelago. Viktor Sobolev stated that Svalbard is a “disputed archipelago,” citing historical Soviet-era coal mines as a basis for Russian interest. In response to the incident, the Norwegian Ambassador, Heidi Olufsen, was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
