Svatovsko necropolis features significant medieval stećak monuments

The Svatovsko necropolis, located on the Morina plateau between Nevesinje and Kalinovik at an altitude of approximately 1,250 meters, is one of the most significant stećak sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The site contains 59 monuments, including 18 slabs, 36 chests, and five gabled stones, decorated with motifs such as crosses, rosettes, vine leaves, shields, and hunting scenes.

Local folklore offers several legends regarding the site's origin. The most prominent tale describes a wedding procession led by a fugitive named Lakišić, who had abducted a girl promised to a local nobleman. According to legend, the party was overtaken by a violent snowstorm and freezing winds, resulting in the deaths of the wedding guests. A second legend suggests the site marks the location of a violent conflict between two competing wedding processions on a narrow mountain path.
