Sven Hüber resigns as German police union deputy amid GDR-era allegations

Sven Hüber, the deputy federal chairman of Germany’s largest police union, the Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP), has resigned from his position. His resignation follows allegations regarding his past as a political officer in the East German (GDR) border troops.

Reports from Apollo News, citing a sworn statement from a witness, allege that during the late 1980s, Hüber mistreated a captured refugee by placing a pistol in the individual's mouth and kicking them. The reports also suggest Hüber advocated for the enforcement of the GDR's shoot-to-kill order. Hüber has denied these allegations, describing them as “defamatory” and “slanderous,” and has indicated intentions to pursue legal action.

Prior to these allegations, Hüber had drawn attention for an article in the GdP member magazine, where he warned police officers against supporting the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. He argued that an AfD government would conflict with the constitutional oath of office and urged officers to utilize their duty to remonstrate against unlawful orders. This stance reportedly led to several members resigning from the union in Saxony-Anhalt.
