Sven Väth criticizes DJ Argy over modern performance styles

German techno pioneer Sven Väth has sparked debate within the electronic music community following a public criticism of Greek DJ Argy. After viewing a video of Argy performing at a festival in Mostar, where the artist was seen playing with his headphone cable, Väth posted a now-deleted comment calling him ‘the worst and biggest clown wannabe DJ’.

The exchange highlights a growing generational divide regarding the direction of modern DJ culture. Väth has expressed ongoing concerns that the industry is shifting away from music selection and crowd connection toward a focus on social media, cameras, and visual spectacle. He maintains that a DJ should be part of the audience rather than an entertainer performing above them.

The tension is underscored by the long history between the two artists. Argy, now a major international figure associated with the Afterlife label, was previously supported by Väth; he released the ‘Unreliable Virgin’ EP on Väth’s Cocoon Recordings in 2007. While Argy has not publicly responded to the comments, the incident has reignited discussions about whether electronic music is becoming a sterile pop spectacle.
