Svendborg apartment block fire forces evacuation and resident rescue

A blaze erupted on the upper floor of an apartment complex on Vestergade in Svendborg, Denmark, prompting a swift evacuation of the building. Residents were cleared from the premises while firefighters worked to dismantle the fire‑damaged section to prevent collapse. Xenia Maibom, who was nearby, recounted seeing thick smoke and rushing outside, then scrambling to pack essential belongings before police ordered the evacuation: “Vi så røg ud af vinduet fra vores stue … jeg flåede det mest nødvendige ud af skabene og ned i en stor papkasse.” No injuries were reported, though the risk of the ruined structure falling onto neighboring homes remained.

In a separate incident in Glesborg, a barn caught fire late at night. Emergency crews arrived to find the entire building engulfed and decided to let it burn out while protecting adjacent structures. Operations chief Anders Rathcke noted, “Hele bygningen er i brand … der var gået ild i noget halm på loftet af en gammel forladt bygning.” The fire caused no harm to people or livestock.

Both incidents underscore the challenges of fire response and community safety in Denmark.
