Svendborg architects propose preserving historic DLG silos

In Svendborg, a debate is unfolding regarding the future of the DLG silos located at Østre Havn. Architect Henning Kongpetsak and a group of collaborators are developing a proposal to preserve and repurpose the large concrete structures, citing their architectural and historical value.

Svendborg Municipality has previously decided that the white and red silos on Østre Kajgade are eligible for demolition, though one building on Østre Kajgade 15 is to be preserved. The municipality has issued an ‘open call’ for private actors to submit proposals for revitalizing the area, with a deadline of October 31, 2026.

Local investor Steffen Larsen has expressed skepticism regarding the economic viability of preserving the silos, noting that they have outlived their original purpose. Concerns have also been raised regarding the financial responsibility for the structures; while DLG is expected to clear the area when they vacate in October 2027, there is uncertainty over who will bear the costs if the municipality takes ownership of the silos without a confirmed new use.
