Svensk Kollektivtrafik promotes bus lanes to reduce urban congestion

Representatives from Svensk Kollektivtrafik, including CEO Johan Wadman and transport expert Lars Sandberg, argue that investing in dedicated bus lanes and signal priority is the most profitable way to improve urban traffic. These measures aim to reduce travel times and increase punctuality, which are key factors in encouraging commuters to choose public transit over private vehicles.

Citing a report from the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, the advocates note that buses and trams currently frequently become stuck in the same traffic jams as cars. This congestion leads to longer travel times, lower punctuality, and increased operational costs. They argue that expanding roads or electrifying vehicle fleets will not solve congestion; road expansion often leads to induced traffic, while electric vehicles contribute to jams just as much as internal combustion engines.
