Svetlana Mojsov awarded the 8 September Order for scientific contributions
President Gordana Siljanovska-Dakovska has awarded the world-renowned biochemist Svetlana Mojsov the ‘8 September’ Order during a ceremony at Villa Vodno. The award recognizes Mojsov’s fundamental contributions to global science and the affirmation of North Macedonia in international intellectual circles.
Born in Skopje, Mojsov pursued her higher education in Belgrade before earning her doctorate at Rockefeller University in New York under the mentorship of Nobel laureate Bruce Merrifield. Her research on peptide synthesis, specifically regarding the hormone glucagon and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), laid the groundwork for modern therapies used to treat diabetes and obesity, including medications like Ozempic.
Mojsov has received numerous international accolades for her work, including the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, the Tang Prize, and being named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2024.
