Svetosavski plateau reconstruction plan revised to increase greenery
The reconstruction project for the Svetosavski plateau in Belgrade's Vračar district has been modified following public objections. The revised plan increases green spaces and tree coverage, replacing previously planned paved and concrete areas with vegetation.
Key changes include the planting of 130 new oak trees and the creation of green oases between the Church of Saint Sava and the Temple of Saint Sava. The access path to the Temple will be narrowed from 18 meters to 6.5 meters, necessitating adjustments to the existing fountain. Additionally, an outdoor chamber stage with a capacity for approximately 200 people will be established in the area between the National Library of Serbia and its annex.
Project author Professor Branislav Mitrović noted that the original design intended for an open, paved space in front of the Temple, similar to St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, but the design was adjusted to meet citizen demands for more greenery. The reconstruction is expected to be completed by autumn 2027.
