Italy prepares 13th military aid package for Ukraine

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has announced that a 13th package of military aid for Ukraine is ready for discussion. The package is expected to be presented to the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic (Copasir) on November 10.

Crosetto noted that the security situation in Ukraine has shifted significantly, stating that while Ukraine previously intercepted 90% of attacks, it currently intercepts only 10% due to rapid advancements in Russian technology. The new aid may include Aster interceptors for the SAMP/T air defense system.

The move highlights internal political divisions within the Italian government. While Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Defense Minister Crosetto, and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani support continued assistance, Vice Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and the Lega party have expressed opposition to further military and financial aid.

Additionally, the current legal mechanism allowing Italy to supply military material to Ukraine is set to expire on December 31. Crosetto intends to propose extending this mechanism to ensure continued support.
