Swansea businesses adopt British Sign Language to improve accessibility

Businesses in Swansea city centre are improving accessibility for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community through British Sign Language (BSL) training. A recent 10-week course, facilitated by the Swansea Business Improvement District (BID), saw a 100% pass rate among its seven participants.

Participants included staff from various sectors, such as Coyote Ugly, Plantasia Tropical Zoo, SocialDice, Basekamp, and reTHINK PR & Marketing. The training, led by BSL instructor Adam Guichard, provided accredited introductory qualifications to help staff communicate more effectively with customers and colleagues.

Following the success of the initial cohort, Swansea BID is opening registrations for the next 10-week course starting on 12 October. The BID provides one free place per city-centre business, with additional spots available through sponsorship of the Swansea Centre for Deaf People.
